Thrilling late move gave Baaeed fans a last memory before Ascot race went wrong
The bit to remember about Baaeed's final outing came just before the home turn when, having been held up with only two behind him, he moved up suddenly and stylishly on to the heels of the leaders. It looked like the start of a thrilling finale and it's a memory worth holding, despite the defeat that followed.
Few horses are capable of giving you that lurching feeling in your stomach, the one that makes you think: "Oh my, this is going to be good." Still fewer can do it in a Group 1 on soft(ish) ground.
That awestruck sensation evaporated pretty quickly. In the time it took Baaeed to switch around four horses, it became clear he wasn't going to be able to just zoom past them and that the final two furlongs of his career were going to be the most awful slog.
