How much does making a mistake cost a horse in a race? It is one of racing's great imponderables, the answer varying from horse to horse and mistake to mistake.

As two-time Irish champion jockey Barry Geraghty quips: “They’re all on a sliding scale from not helping to completely ruining your chance.”

That is because there are so many variables: what type of mistake was it, was rhythm broken, was forward momentum lost, how much energy did it cost, or will it cost to recover, was position lost, was any ground forfeited, how experienced is the horse, how brave is the horse, did it affect the horse’s confidence, did it affect the trust between horse and jockey, when in the race did it happen, how did it happen, what caused it? Construction factories do not have as many moving parts.
