Aidan O’Brien spoke openly and informatively at Ballydoyle on Wednesday when the 2018 Irish Flat racing was launched at the home of our most successful trainer.

Progress reports on his Classic candidates for the year were readily forthcoming for the gathered media, and this correspondent was pleased to hear positive words about The Pentagon, the second favourite for the Derby and a colt who has the potential to make a big impact this season.

A decisive winner under Ana O'Brien at the Curragh on his second start, he went on to win the Group 3 Tyros Stakes at Leopardstown, but it was his performance on his only subsequent appearance that promised most for this year.
