It is ticking towards 6pm in Moorefield Medical Centre on the outskirts of Newbridge town. That is pack-up-and-go-home time for most of us, yet Dr Adrian McGoldrick is wrapped up in piles of paperwork while busy telling his fellow practitioner Brendan Healy about a good friend of ours.

"He's in terrific form. He really is doing fantastically well," says the chief medical officer for the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board, who is vacating his role at the age of 65 after easing the pain for so many during his outstanding 11-year stint.
