It has been a marathon, not a sprint, but the Hatchfield Farm saga may finally be entering its closing stages.

Since 2008 the Racing Post has been reporting on Lord Derby's attempt to build housing on land situated in the north-east of Newmarket on Fordham Road, opposite a huge Tesco supermarket and close to the A14/A142 junction.

Wheat and sugar beat are currently grown on Hatchfield Farm. Derby's desire to change that has put him at odds with the town's racing community and led to a long and acrimonious battle.
