When Anthony Van Dyck broke a fetlock in the Melbourne Cup on November 3, it was the first time in nearly 200 years that a winner of the Derby had suffered fatal injuries during a race.

Anthony Van Dyck was Aidan O'Brien's third string when triumphing in a blanket finish to the 2019 Derby, with four rivals within a length of him.

In his last completed race he became the first Derby winner to race in Australia when beaten a head in the Caulfield Cup. Carrying top weight in the Melbourne Cup, he had to be pulled up turning for home and was humanely euthanised.
