We're still waiting for a nice bit of sun but the stars of this summer showed themselves over the weekend. Palace Pier, Al Aasy and St Mark's Basilica, there's three horses who should keep us in thrills over the coming months, who will sharpen the anticipation for any race in which their names appear among the entries.
That said, the abiding memory of Saturday's Al Shaqab Lockinge will surely be the insolence of Frankie Dettori looking around for dangers more than two furlongs from home in a top-class mile race. It was actually three looks, one between his legs, a long gaze around to his left and then another leftwards glance before he decided to press the big button marked 'Go'.
An apprentice who spent that much of a race looking about at everyone else might come in for a proper scolding on return to base. Only last week in a disciplinary hearing about interference, one jockey cited a desire to avoid unbalancing his mount as the (convenient) reason for not looking to his inner before shifting towards the rail.
