When you utter the surname McCain one thing comes to mind: Grand National glory. Donald, who took over from his father and four-time National winner Ginger in 2006, followed in his footsteps by landing the big one at Aintree with Ballabriggs in 2011. That also happened to be his best season.

With 153 winners, more than £1.2 million in prize-money and the status of Grand National-winning trainer in only his fifth season in the job, McCain had one of the most feared and established stables in the country and potentially a title-challenging northern-based team.
