The news that Pat Smullen will be out of action for the foreseeable future, following the diagnosis of a tumour, cast a shadow over the start of the Irish Flat season.

Smullen’s return to health is an overarching concern for Dermot Weld as the Flat season begins to take off.

He says: "We've shared in many great days at home and abroad over the past 20 years. Pat's physical fitness, determination and positive attitude are major plus factors. All of us here wish him a speedy recovery and I look forward to having him back again riding big-race winners for me all over the world."
