Having excelled at improving horses bought out of other stables, Tim Vaughan chose to make a fresh start four years ago. Out went the old and in their place came a herd of unbroken store horses. The trainer felt it was the best way to improve the quality of his string.

Four years on and Vaughan’s strategy is starting to pay dividends. His tally of winners rose to 71 last season, when his prize-money haul of £478,013 has been surpassed in only two of the 12 seasons he has held a licence.
