Gavin Cromwell keeps breaking new ground, literally and figuratively.
Literally in the shape of a huge new stable block and an all-weather gallop as the number of horses in his care swells to three figures, and figuratively in the shape of a very successful Flat season which included the victory of Quick Suzy in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. One gets the sense that Cromwell would like to be more of a dual-purpose trainer in years to come.
Jump racing continues to be the bread and butter, though, and while the number of winners and prize-money on home soil were slightly down last season compared to his best ever season in 2019-20, they were massively enhanced by the victories of Flooring Porter and Vanillier at the Cheltenham Festival, both of whom should once again be among the stable's leading lights this season.
