Smaller trainers battling away for a share of the spoils
Sunday to Sunday, a typical week in the Irish jumping calendar, five meetings, 37 races. Perhaps a better week than average, book-ended by the Troytown fixture at Navan – a prime day at the County Meath track – and a Fairyhouse card featuring three Grade 1s. In between, Thurles on a Thursday, ever-reliable staple of the Irish winter, Limerick on Friday, and Saturday's Fairyhouse curtain-raiser.

Tully East, beginners' chase, Thurles
A very welcome win for trainer Alan Fleming, only his third of the season. It was a different story last season when Fleming compiled 25 wins at a 27 per cent strike-rate, playing a significant part in propelling owner Barry Connell into sixth place on the Irish owners' table, close on the heels of Andrea and Graham Wylie. This was only a fifth winner of the season for Connell, a poor return for a policy which has regularly involved expensive purchases.
