Mick Fitzgerald says Grand National hero Rough Quest elevated him to a new level
Mick Fitzgerald, 46, was one of the most successful jump jockeys of the modern era, riding nearly 1,400 winners before injury ended his riding career in 2008. Longstanding stable jockey for Nicky Henderson's powerful Lambourn operation, he rode a multitude of big-race winners, including the Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup. Now a broadcaster, he is a member of the Channel 4 Racing team. He is also a jockey coach at the British Racing School.

Trainer Ray Callow
Biggest win Racephone Hcap Hdle (Uttoxeter), 1991
He was trained by a guy called Ray Callow who had only a small yard in Somerset but I'll be eternally grateful to him. My very first runner over hurdles had been a winner [Lover's Secret at Ludlow on December 11, 1988] and I rode another winner at Hereford soon after and thought it was easy. But then I went 18 months before my next winner and I was very much at a crossroads – I was struggling, and I was going to go to New Zealand and see the world. I schooled a few horses for Ray and he took a chance on me; had that not happened I certainly wouldn't have ridden 1,380 winners and I wouldn't be where I am today. I won four times on Duncan Idaho in 1990-91 and he was my first televised winner in the mud on Midlands National day at Uttoxeter. I'll never forget it because I came between two guys who had been heroes of mine – Peter Scudamore and Richard Dunwoody. He basically gave me a lifeline.

Trainer Nicky Henderson
Biggest win Cathcart Chase 1994
He realised a dream for me in 1994 when he gave me my first winner at the Cheltenham Festival and he was also my first big winner for Nicky Henderson. I'd gone there in June the previous year so it was my first season and I didn't really think it was going that well so it was very important. As everyone knows, for the master of Seven Barrows there's only one Cheltenham and it seems as if the whole season revolves around it. The week hadn’t gone well for me: I'd managed to deck Remittance Man the day before in the Champion Chase. I spent the whole night watching the replay – it affected me that much. I've never lacked faith in my own abilities but when you deck the best jumper in the country, you do start having doubts. Nicky had given me an opportunity but it hadn't worked out and I was feeling the pressure. We were in the last-chance saloon by the time the Cathcart came along and it was very, very special. Raymylette jumped brilliant – you could rely on that – but he went very badly right on the run-in. It was huge for me and I think it was important for Nicky as well because he'd put his neck on the line for me.
