Well, that was a good start for my Crystal Palace to be top of the Premier League at Christmas bet. A 1-0 home defeat to West Brom.
I was awash with embarrassment when my mother-in-law opened her birthday present from me at the start of last week. I had got her a fiver on that Palace investment at 200-1. I was confident the Eagles would get three points in their opener and the gift would still look magnificent when she received it.
"You might win £1,000!" I gushed. "No, you won't," responded the brother-in-law. "You have no chance of winning anything, mum."
