I enjoyed a wonderful conversation with my daughter the other day which started with her angrily bleating: “It's just not fair.”

“What's not fair?” I replied, genuinely uncertain of the issue. Then came the magical retort: “Nothing is fair!”

An interesting assessment of the world from a three-year-old brain. She must get her grumpy side from me – because even when life is going more than fairly I seem to find the negative aspects. Even though last week's golf punting went almost perfectly, I was left feeling unsatisfied. I have come to realise I have an infuriating streak of perfectionism which virtually guarantees permanent abject misery. It's just not fair.
