As Channel 4's betting reporter for nearly three decades he became, along with Frankie Dettori, one of only two figures in the sport who was known to the general public.

McCririck's television persona, with his garish outfits, on-screen rants and male chauvinism, was deliberately provocative and made him seem part-buffoon.
