For all that was evidently bad on social media this week, popular Irish trainer Michael O’Callaghan proved that, in the right hands, sites such as Twitter can bring together like-minded people to engage in a reasoned and dignified manner.

O’Callaghan asked his 4,300 or so followers to bang their heads together and come up with some ideas on how to get people interested in racing and later revealed to the Racing Post that he held genuine worries for the long-term future of the sport that continues to “bleed followers”.

A big believer in social media, O’Callaghan regularly shares images and videos from his Curragh-based stables in an attempt to attract prospective fans, and now is the time for other key stakeholders in the sport to follow suit.
