When the Scottish-trained One For Arthur crossed the line in front to land the 2017 Grand National, jockey Derek Fox punching the air in his saltire silks, he became only the second winner of the world's most famous steeplechase to be trained north of the border.

That statistic alone might be said to paint a revealing picture of where racing stands in Scotland – and where Scotland stands in racing.

Unlike their Celtic cousins in Ireland, Scotland has never enjoyed a large or all-conquering racing industry, with just five racecourses and little more than a couple of dozen trainers, most of them operating at lower levels, scattered across the country.
