Plenty of promise shown by beaten Irish horses at Royal Ascot

To the winner the spoils and most of the post-race publicity that goes with it. That’s the nature of things and it was no different at Royal Ascot last week when Frankie Dettori once again stole the limelight and Aidan O’Brien again emerged as leading trainer at the meeting.

O’Brien was the only Irish trainer to get on the scoreboard and that hadn’t happened since 2009, when Mastercraftsman won the St James’s Palace Stakes and Yeats made history with a fourth consecutive Gold Cup victory.

Leaving the Ballydoyle winners out of the equation for now, there were a few fine efforts in defeat by horses from other Irish yards, with Master Of Reality running a cracking race in the Gold Cup when losing out on second place by inches.
