A chance meeting at a party has propelled Izzie Marshall to the head of Britain's women riders' championship.

Marshall, who has six winners to her name, believes the position is borrowed rather than permanent – "Gina [Andrews] hasn't got going yet" – but after finishing a distant runner-up three times to Andrews in the title race you sense it will be closer this time.

After seven weeks of the season Andrews has ridden just one winner, but her husband, trainer Tom Ellis, rolls out his biggest gun at Alnwick on Sunday and it will be a surprise if Latenightpass fails to win and record Andrews' triple century in points.
