Graduation day is always a special occasion, but for Northern Racing College students, Friday’s ceremony was particularly poignant.
Special guest Lizzie Jones, singer and widow of Welsh international rugby league player Danny, presented the college with a defibrillator – paid for in part by students’ fundraising efforts.

The Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund, set up by Lizzie after Danny suffered a fatal cardiac arrest on the pitch, matched the £750 raised by the college as part of its first official student fundraiser.

“I knew I was going to marry Danny from the first time we went out,” says Lizzie. “Losing him that day devastated the family. It just didn’t occur to me that a seemingly fit and healthy athlete like Danny could ever be struck down with a heart condition. It goes to show that it can happen to anyone.
