The opening fixture of Newmarket's 2020 season is still more than three months away yet the weather on the second Wednesday of January seems keen to get on with it.

Beneath expansive East Anglian skies, a mild, sunny morning has surprised some hibernating residents. "I might have to take off one of my jumpers," declares one Cafe Nero customer.

While it's not quite warm enough to provoke balmy visions of this summer's Newmarket Nights with Bryan Ferry and Rick Astley, there is a palpable hint of spring in the air.
