Newland's unique approach proving a winning formula
Gotta horse? James Pyman on the jumps trainers owners should note
Suppose you had deep enough pockets to own a horse you wanted to run in jumps races, which trainer would you send it to? When answering this question, I’m swayed by a particular metric pertaining to the records of trainers available in the statistics section of beta.racingpost.com.
Every owner wants the thrill of witnessing their horse finish first, and you can now rank trainers by their winners-to-runners percentages, which reveal how many of their raced horses have managed to win a race in a requested time period. To rank trainers by this metric when viewing the trainer seasonal stats table, press the % column label that sits immediately right of the winners-to-runners label in the grey-coloured top row.
This metric reflects the quality of the horses in a trainer’s yard, but also whether their training methods are effective and if they are any good at placing their horses. When analysing trainers, I often place more weight on this percentage than factors such as their total wins, prize-money earned or strike-rate.
