The scale of the opportunity for gambling operators in the United States was in the news again last week, but there was also a reminder that exploiting it may not always be simple.

The £8.1 billion approach for Entain from US casino company MGM Resorts International, which was revealed recently, followed hot on the heels of the acceptance of Caesars Entertainment's £2.9bn takeover bid for William Hill.

The move for two of European gambling's biggest names by American casino giants have been the most high-profile examples of the jostling for position taking place in a market forecast to be worth $20bn by 2025 by outgoing Entain chief executive Shay Segev.
