Rock bottom may or may not be in sight for Ireland's on-course bookmakers, but, either way, this is a long-term predicament.

Encouragingly, the next generation of layers are adapting in a way that is necessary and might be sustainable, although the revelation of Brian Graham’s injunction highlights how divisive this process can be.

A vibrant betting ring enhances the raceday atmosphere. We don’t want to lose it, and it still has the potential to be an antidote to the ‘can’t get on’ reality that prevails for many punters.
