Lost amid the overwhelming outpouring of grief that has prevailed since Vautour's untimely death is that his two final racecourse appearances served only to highlight his vulnerabilities.

That is entirely appropriate, as this is a horse that deserves to be remembered for what he did and was, rather than for what he failed to do or wasn't. Vautour was a fantastic specimen and to watch him soar was an exquisite pleasure.

For three years in succession, contrary to an inexplicable sluggishness on Willie Mullins' gallops, Vautour practically owned the Cheltenham Festival.
