“Call me Sue,” said a smiling Lady Susan Brooke, wife of Sir Alastair of the Brooke Baronetcy of Almondbury, as we entered her home in the Powys hamlet of Dolau. We had been invited to supper by her daughter Lorna, an occasion I’ve reflected on this week following Lorna’s shocking death after a fall at Taunton.

That she lived in a place pronounced ‘Dolly’ seemed to tickle Lorna when giving us directions, but she was someone who found humour, often dry, a comfortable friend.
