As work continues towards the resumption of point-to-point racing after the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine pressed the pause button on the current season, it is worth noting the continuing influence of the sport on the wider one of horseracing.

Arguably the finest graduate of an Irish point-to-point, the three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate, famously won a two-runner point-to-point at Belclare in 1999.

There is a lot less known about his only rival in that race, Well Then Now Then. She finished eight lengths adrift of Best Mate before going on to be placed six times and then land two victories, including a defeat of the high-class Strong Flow in a novice hurdle, when trained by Henry Daly.
