Intense rivalry in racing has a habit of muddying waters rather than clarifying them. A head victory here and a neck defeat there can have the balance of power shifting like identical twins on a see-saw, which is ideal for devotees of the prolonged saloon bar debate, but not so good for anybody seeking a definitive pecking order and some peace of mind.

Roaring Lion v Saxon Warrior hung in the balance for some months, and from the running of the Racing Post Trophy to beyond the 2,000 Guineas it looked for all the world as if it would be the Irish challenger leaving the ring with the belt around his waist.

He had, after all, shown himself to be the premier two-year-old with his victory at Doncaster and then, with his home reputation marching before him, landed what looked a knockout blow with a convincing win at Newmarket.
