A statue of Lester Piggott will be unveiled at York on the opening day of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival on Wednesday.

Although Piggott was born in Wantage, Berkshire, his family trace their roots back to the north and the 11-time champion jockey often described York as his favourite track.

It was also a successful venue for him, as he recorded five victories in the Group 1 International Stakes, four in the Yorkshire Oaks and seven in the Nunthorpe Stakes.
