Golf punters can spend each week in their own little bubble – a bubble that makes them difficult to live with – and it is a bubble which needs popping as often as possible for the sanity of everyone concerned.

Some bubbles are positive and effective. Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods used to get into bubbles that allowed them to win countless tournaments, both a picture of golfing concentration and oblivious to everything else going on around them. A student revising for a set of exams can get into a bubble to successfully absorb the required knowledge.

Short-term bubbles can be healthy and helpful, but it is the 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week bubbles that cause problems.
