Ireland's betting shops are facing their "greatest challenge" and an increase in betting duty could force many to cease trading, the Irish government has been warned.

In a submission to finance minister Paschal Donohoe in the run-up to Tuesday's budget, the Irish Bookmakers Association (IBA) has asked for support from the government and for tax relief to be provided on a per property rather than per operator basis.

The number of betting shops in Ireland has fallen significantly in recent years, with 791 in operation in 2021 compared to 1,385 in 2008.
