'In the race to perfection there is no finishing line'
Nicholas Godfrey puts the questions to Godolphin chief executive John Ferguson
How happy are you with Godolphin’s progress in 2016 since the breeding and racing operations came together under one umbrella?
The idea behind the merger of the two operations was to combine both Darley and Godolphin into one operation. We are now all one team and everybody is thriving on that aspect. We have a more consistent culture where everyone is playing their part for success both on the racetrack and on the stud farms.
Are you happy with where Godolphin is now at, or is there much more work to be done?
To quote Sheikh Mohammed: "In the race to perfection there is no finishing line."
You were widely quoted that his new role entailed giving the Godolphin organisation a "kick in the belly". Has this been administered and if so, in what ways?
The ‘kick in the belly’ is a figure of speech to improve the overall performance of the organisation. This is about putting the right processes in place to enable the results to come. Our trainers are focusing on the best and most progressive horses and we are making sure that they have the right level of support to help them achieve the results.
