Nigel Twiston-Davies hoping to turn Grand National into a family affair
Steve Dennis talks to the dual National winner
Two Grand National victories, two very memorable post-race reactions. For a man who prefers doing to talking, whose version of Room 101 would surely embrace light badinage with a journalist, Nigel Twiston-Davies has certainly left his conversational imprint on Aintree.
The first time, after Earth Summit had splashed gallantly through the mud 20 years ago this soggy spring, Twiston-Davies was the man "who didn't do interviews", confounding the hitherto unflappable Desmond Lynam. Second time around, four years later with Bindaree, there was a sombre cast to proceedings as the trainer admitted that he had been on the point of giving up, going away, getting lost, and would indeed have done so had he'd been standing in the place reserved for the second horse.
Now he trains Blaklion, joint-favourite for the big race on Saturday. We know he does interviews; we know he's not planning to give up the game; what, if the plucky Blaklion prevails, will Twiston-Davies have in store for the viewing millions? The man in question smiles broadly, giving little away.
