'If I was working for him now I'd be taking a lot more notes, that's for sure'
Rebecca Curtis on what she learned from fellow Welsh trainer Peter Bowen
I went to work for Peter when I was 17 or so – I knew about horses, I'd ridden since I was four, I'd represented Wales at junior level showjumping, so I had a good basic knowledge, but his yard was such a good place to get a grounding in the racing world.
I was working in the yard, riding out – I was doing a fair bit of babysitting for him too – and Peter left me in charge of the yard when he went racing, which was a lot of faith to put in someone of my age. It helped me grow up, helped me take on responsibilities. There was a proper family feel to the yard, a laid-back atmosphere, and they made me feel part of the family too.
Obviously as a trainer you do what works for you, you train the way you think is right, but I did learn a lot from Peter that I put into practice when I started training, especially about getting horses very fit, about feeding properly, about keeping them healthy.
