'I'd love to meet my grandfather again to tell him how I've got on'
The Devon trainer, 52, on winning the Grand National and improving at golf
What advice would you give your ten-year-old self?
He'd be a bit confused, but I'd tell him not to sell Tiger Roll.
What is your earliest racing memory?
I remember going to Newton Abbot racecourse on school days with £3 in my pocket and putting 50p on each race with the Tote. I used to go with my grandfather, Bill Hawke, most of the time. One day I was supposed to be at school and I noticed the gentleman in front of me in the queue was my woodwork teacher, who was also supposed to be at school, so we agreed not to say anything.
What was the best piece of advice you received before taking out your trainer's licence?
I used to work for David Barons and he told me not to do it, which always stuck with me. So many good jockeys turn to training and find it difficult. When you’re a jockey, you ride, shower, then drive home. As a trainer you live with horses 24/7, which I absolutely love.
