'I'd go back to March 1987 when Ridley Lamb saved me from bankruptcy'

To coincide with a Doctor Who special on BBC1 on Christmas Day, we invited racing professionals to tell us where they'd go and why if they could borrow the doctor's time-travelling Tardis . . .

Nina Carberry, jockey
Oh definitely Bobbyjo winning the Grand National! I was only a nipper at the time and I didn't really appreciate the magnitude of it all. I'd love to go back in time and experience it all over again. It was the best day for the whole family.

Stuart Coltherd, trainer
For me it would have to be a return to April 2013 when Tartan Snow won at Aintree.

Robert Cooper, presenter
I'd like to go back to 1969 and see The Beatles on a roof in Savile Row performing 'Get Back' with Billy Preston just before they broke up.

Henry Daly, trainer
I'd most definitely try and find my way back to the Edwardian era of the early 1900s as they were the elysian fields of hunting in big wide open spaces – a dream come true.

Harry Fry, trainer
I'd like to go back to World War II as I have always had a hankering to fly a Spitfire as they were wonderful planes. I had a pilot's licence for about five years but it has now lapsed – perhaps I will renew it.

Warren Greatrex, trainer
I would like to be around Vincent O'Brien in his prime in the 1950s and stay with him for some time. Everything we do now goes back to him. To do what he did over jumps and then switch to the Flat and train Classic winners was incredible. He changed everything.

Paul Henderson, trainer
I'd love to see Pendil in the flesh. There is a famous picture of him jumping at Kempton, and it's one of my first racing memories. Everyone says he was the most beautiful jumper, and I'd love to go back and see him.

Richard Hoiles, commentator
I would love to be aboard HMS Beagle with Charles Darwin when he visited the Galapagos Islands and wrote 'On The Origin Of Species'.

Brian Hughes, jockey
I'd like to go back 40 years and see my grandparents.

William Kennedy, jockey
My dad [Vivian Kennedy snr] rode the winner of the Irish Cesarewitch on a horse called Bigaroon – I would love to have been there.

Mark Kershaw, Ffos Las director
I'd go back to Whitbread Gold Cup day in 1984 when five horses jumped the last together and Special Cargo got up to win. Just a fantastic race.

Kerry Lee, trainer
I'd go back to the infield of Worcester racecourse on the warm summer's day that our dog Eric took it upon himself to conduct a quality and taste test of a number of nearby picnics. I'd warned the hungry locals to protect their food, hopefully avoiding the end product which was a delighted looking Eric making off towards the stables, tail wagging furiously, with a whole cooked chicken clamped firmly and proudly between his jaws!

Barry Murtagh, trainer
There's no specific time for me but if I could start all over again, I'd say I'd make a special effort to become more dedicated.

Joseph O'Brien, trainer
Back into the starting stalls before the Irish Champion Stakes in 2014.

Darren Owen, commentator
I'd go back to the Wild West. I've always loved westerns and I've been to the Black Hills, Little Big Horn, lots of places like that. It'd be great to smoke the peace pipe with some Indians! Failing that, should the Tardis malfunction, it'd be Aintree for one of the early Grand Nationals. It'd be something to see Captain Becher diving into the ditch.

Nick Rust, BHA chief executive
That's easy. I'd go back to March 1987 and Cheltenham when Ridley Lamb saved me from bankruptcy as a student by winning the Gold Cup on The Thinker.

Nigel Twiston-Davies, trainer
I think I'd stay right where I am.
