'I do seem to have a lot of stories about naked men!'
The North Yorkshire-based trainer 40, takes our weekly grilling
What advice would you give your ten-year-old self?
Our family has always had work ethic instilled into us so hard work came naturally, but I would advise other youngsters to get their heads down and graft. Nobody should expect it handed on a plate and hard graft hurts nobody, plus if you work hard you can play hard!
What were the most important lessons about training that you learned from your grandfather David Chapman?
Grandad always used to say 'Tell 'em nowt' which isn’t really that helpful in today’s very different racing world. So it would be the importance of keeping horses happy and giving them something to look forward to every day. I’m obsessed with turning horses out.
What have been the challenges of striking out as the licence holder and building the yard into a successful operation?
It was quite an eye-opener to go from taking a wage packet home every week to making sure everyone got paid. I was lucky that I had a platform to start from taking over from Grandad and it was nice that he got to see me training winners for a few years before he died.
