'Henry showed me how to treat and respect people'
Newmarket trainer Ed Vaughan on Sir Henry Cecil
I've learned a lot from so many people but I learned more from Henry about being a human being than about being a trainer. That was the important thing.
He was so good to me. I was assistant to Alec Stewart for a year and a half and when Alec passed away in August 2004 I took over until October. Then I started out on my own with just half a dozen horses up at Warren Place. Henry went out of his way to look after me. It's no exaggeration to say I wouldn't be here training today if it wasn't for him because I didn't have anywhere to go and he made room for me and I'll be forever grateful.
He really made me feel welcome and helped me. For example, if I didn't have enough horses to work I could always put horses in with his. More than that though, he was a great mentor in showing how to treat people the way you'd like to be treated yourself.
