'He was probably the best I rode - he was a bit special'
Trainer and ex-jockey Chris Grant on the prolific Blazing Walker
I rode some good horses in my time, I won three races on One Man in his season over hurdles, but the one that stands out for me on a personal level is Blazing Walker. He was a bit special.
He was probably the best I rode too. I rode him as a young horse and later got back on him when he started over fences. We won five novice chases, one of them under 12st 7lb, which you won't see these days, and the following season [1990-91] won six off the belt.
Three of those were at Ascot, including the H&T Walker Gold Cup – he used to jump a little to the right, and when at the end of the year Arthur Stephenson sent him to Aintree for the Melling Chase everyone said it was a mistake, that he wouldn't be as good that way round. He did jump a bit right but it didn't stop him, he beat the first two from the Queen Mother Champion Chase by ten lengths, his class saw him through.
