Bollin Eric became the first Yorkshire-trained horse since Peleid in 1973 to win the St Leger when he triumphed on Town Moor in 2002, and everything about him was tailored to raise the roof at Doncaster. He was owned by Sir Neil Westbrook, formerly a lord major of Manchester who lived on an estate near the city with his wife, Lady Joan, while neither Bollin Eric’s trainer, Tim Easterby, nor his jockey, Kevin Darley, had previously won a Classic.
