Greene lighting the way for the riding stars of tomorrow
Peter Thomas follows ex-jockey Rodi Greene on his West Country coaching mission
When the going gets tough, the UK Coaching Awards winners get going, so the saying goes, and Rodi Greene is in no mood to be denied.
There's a power cut ongoing on the small housing estate in his small Somerset village and normal life has ground to a halt. Kettles sit unboiled, Christmas trees lurk lightlessly in living room corners and Judge Rinder, to his eternal chagrin, delivers his verdicts unwatched. Neighbours roam the streets in consternation.
Greene is concerned. He has two conditional jockeys with him who are expecting the benefit of his wisdom and the converted garden shed that serves as his exercise room has an electricity supply in theory, but no electricity; it's cold and it's dark, too dark for young riders on mechanical horses to see what they're doing or for their mentor to observe them sagely.
