Gredley makes piece of history with first ride in famous colours

Tim Gredley made history when riding Bincombe at Cottenham’s season-opening fixture on Sunday, and not because he wore the colours carried to victory by User Friendly in the 1992 Oaks and St Leger.

After peeling off the yellow and black silks of his father Bill in Cottenham’s dimly lit changing room, Gredley, who had just taken part in his first point-to-point, admitted: “It was rather special wearing those today.”

Nor will the newcomer be able to claim any particular significance in having Frankie Dettori and Michael Hills present to support him, although in a sport where jockey mentors are common, that pair were a bit special.
