From the riptide of racing’s great ocean, James Fanshawe has momentarily broken free. The slender man has caught the biggest of waves and is riding high, casting his net over some of the sport's summer treasure as he goes.

Habitually Fanshawe is not one of Newmarket’s front-runners when the flowers begin to bloom in spring, but when his Pegasus Stables hits form it really takes off. With The Tin Man capturing a Group 1 at Royal Ascot and Higher Power scooping the Northumberland Plate on consecutive Saturdays recently, he is in full flight.

“We’ve tried to analyse it,” says Fanshawe, a man always searching for answers. “Every spring I think 'Come on, we need to get going' and try something different but it never bloody works. They looked better this spring but the past two years they’ve really come good later in the year and hopefully we’re doing it again. The worst thing would be if they didn’t come at all!”
