Hot on the heels of the Guineas meeting at Newmarket comes three days in May at Chester. Racing on the Roodee is always a unique experience due to the track's location and layout, but trainers are not afraid to send good horses there.

The Chester Cup is one of the top staying handicaps of the season, while the meeting's Classic trials attract leading contenders. The fact Aidan O'Brien always sends over a sizeable contingent to this fixture speaks for itself, and here is a selection of some of the most memorable May meeting moments.

Sea Pigeon's sensational Chester Cups

It would bie a year or two before Sea Pigeon established himself as the top two-mile hurdler around, but in the late 1970s he was already a top staying handicapper on the Flat. His win under 10st in the 1979 Ebor remains a record, but his two Chester Cup victories in 1977 and 1978 are also well worth mentioning. After carrying a mere 8st 8lb to win in 1977, he had 13lb more on his back a year later against a more competitive field.
