It would be fair to assume quite a few Welshmen failed to reach their beds on Saturday following the nation’s rugby triumph over England.

Daniel Bourne was among them, although in his case it had nothing to do with odd-shaped balls, but the necessity to join a team of night-shift workers on a railway line. Nocturnal engineering reduces line closures during the day.

After clocking off, Bourne, 28, eschewed bed and headed to the Ross Harriers’ point-to-point at Monmouthshire Showground, a venue staging racing for the first time, and saddled the inaugural winner, Kings Cross.
