Last Saturday’s Bunbury Cup at Newmarket won by Golden Steps was the first of a series of big 7f races taking place in July, meaning horses with desirable speed and stamina for this intermediate distance will frequently be in the spotlight in the coming days and weeks.

The next instalment is at the Curragh on Sunday, when the newly upgraded Friarstown Stud Minstrel Stakes will be run as a Group 2 for the first time. Tomorrow week, Ascot stages the valuable Gigaset International handicap, and then on July 26 the Group 2 Qatar Lennox Stakes takes place at Glorious Goodwood.

Seven furlongs has a reputation for being a specialist trip and when assessing 7f races, particularly those of higher class, whether the distance is likely to suit the runners is a factor I consider to be extremely important.
