Mullins’ stars could outshine Elliott’s hotpots at Leopardstown Christmas Festival
The four days at Leopardstown will feature many hotpots trained by the big two Irish jumps trainers, Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott. The contrasting fortunes of their favourites at the meeting last season suggests Mullins’ shorties may have the edge.
The performance of fancied runners trained by Mullins was extraordinarily good with 13 of his 17 favourites hitting the target, for a £1 level-stakes profit of £7.28. His shortest-priced failure was Nichols Canyon – turned over at 2-5 in the Grade 1 Ryanair Hurdle –but he rebounded in a big way two starts later when landing the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Elliott’s three favourites were all beaten.
