Pronouncements by the authorities should be treated with scepticism and if they come from the marketing department they ought to be taken with a hundredweight of salt.

Fun though Champions Day was, the accompanying narrative that it marked the end of the proper season defies logic, as well as past and present history.

Uninitiated folk leaving Ascot, having watched the crowning of champions, might have had the impression there was nothing serious to be bothered about on the Flat until next spring. That is simply wrong and risks their missing out on plenty, not least the winner of Britain's most important race.
