Tom Cannon has developed a strong relationship with Edwardstone and his understanding of him was key to their Tingle Creek success.
If you make the running, you are in charge of the situation but if you choose to hold your horse up, you can be a hostage to the pace set by your rivals. Cannon took the second option but did not panic because he knew Edwardstone would come home well and there's nothing more thrilling than powering through the field on a hold-up horse.
I remember winning the Veterans' Final at Sandown with Buywise in 2018 with similar tactics. It was my first time riding him and I had the most brilliant passage through the race. Our rivals kept coming back to us as the race progressed and he flew home after the last.
